Image-search News
What’s up with Google Image Search? In short, new images are indexed still fast, but it looses a little bit of speed. The German image search shows still the old interface – why? I noticed a small but fine detail in the english Google image-search. A new option let you „show size“ of the images. Moreover: has the ranking factor „hotlink“ loose weight? It seems so, but is it good or bad? Finally, I started a new project…
Fast indexation of new images is stuttering…
Since mid November the indexation of new images is very fast (see also here: „Image Search news [1]: Google indexes new images very fast„). In the beginning of 2011 it took only 1-2 days until new images appears in Googles image search. But actually the newest image is from Jan. 6th, 2011. So may be the good times of very fast indexation have passed – we will see.
How do I check this? I have several galleries where I uplaod nearly daily new images. I have allways a page – mostly the homepage, where I post new images sortet by time. When I search with the site:command I could check easy and fast which of the new images is indexed by google. I do this one or two timer per day.
For example: this blog has its own gallery. It exists since Jan. 2nd, 2011. With the site:command I can see that Google has indexed 50 images. Not bad. The newest image is „Google search ranking factors“ (see right) from this article: „The relationship between search ranking-factors„. I uploaded the picture on Jan 6th, 2011. So I know the differnce between uploading ond indexation. I also check about 10 other galleries – and I am in contact with some other webmasters who confirm my obersvation.
If you have a gallery please let me know what you observe.
New detail in Google image-search: „show size“

Images option: "Show size"
Some days ago i noticed a new option in the Google image-search. It is show under the options in the sidebar on the left side of the image-search. Use „show size“ to show the width and the high of the image-results. I think its a good idea. Perhaps gets lot of feedback that this info is missing. It’s a good idea to insert this option, but I can not see how this could work with other missing infos, e.g. the domain.
Nevertheless the new image-search layout makes it really hard to see the pictures. They have not enough „space“ to live. Perhaps I should buy a smaller screen so that I won’t see these this picture-patchwork…
Here an example-screen for the new „Size-feature“:

Google images shows Size of Mona Lisa
By the way: in Germany is still the old image-search at work. Perhaps Google-Germany has also problems with the new layout. But: as long as I search for changings: there is nothing happend in germany imagesearch since mid of last year. From my point of view it would be nice if Google develops two alternative image-searches. But, ok, this is unrealistic.
Hotlinking as ranking-factor less important?
One og the ranking factors for images that Google never confirmed is „hotlinking“ (see here what it is: „What is hotlinking? How to find and protect hotlinks…„). Nevertheless I am sure it is one. In the last two weeks I observed a decline of some of my images. They got their high rankings because of some hotlinks from nice forums. I haven’t changed anything on their pages. I see this not only once, but some times. So may be the ranking factor „hotlinking“ looses importance. Would be a good thing because the traffic of many pictures are stolen by hotlinking. On the other hand we „image-SEOs“ loose an interesting and effective methode for optimizing images…
New domain „bildersuche.org“
Ok, this information is not so interesting because it focuses on a german site. I bought the domain „bildersuche.org“ (transl. „imagesearch.org„). I mention this because it’s a great opportunity to demonstrate my „anti-satellite-strategy„. I build a new service by spitting off some expertise from another project. The site will concentrate a lot of information about image-search on the web: licence-free images, stockphoto-databases, image-search-engines and so on. If you like check out here: Bildersuche.org.
Btw: hard work to build a brand with a keyword-domain ;-)
